Following God's leading often takes you to places you never thought you'd "go"...
Working with the mothers in the Maternity, Neonatal, and Pediatric wards at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital, we started noticing a common problem... Many (if not most) of the children we encountered in our tent were not wearing diapers. As you can imagine, that often leads to potential health and hygiene concerns. We spend a great deal of time teaching about germs, germ prevention, and the importance of good sanitation and hygiene in a healthcare environment. Children without diapers is a huge problem!
As we started to dig into the situation, we learned about some of the real problems that mothers in Uganda face. Disposable diapers (or "pampers" as they're all called), have taken over the diaper market in Uganda. But, unfortunately, they are expensive! One disposable diaper costs about 1800 Uganda Shillings, which is about 20% of the daily income of the average Ugandan mother in the Kabale region. 20%! So as a mother struggling to pay for food, education, healthcare, etc., diapers often end up on the bottom of the priority list (rather than on the baby). Mothers desperate to care for their child sometimes even resort to trying to wash out and reuse disposables which is ineffective and unsafe. Additionally, these pampers are frequently improperly disposed of - ending up in waterways or on the side of the road. The impact on health and the environment is disastrous.
Likewise, according to a recent audit report, 64% of girls in Uganda miss school due to lack of access to menstrual hygiene products. Beyond the practical challenges of managing menstruation, many Ugandan girls also face significant stigma and taboos surrounding this natural bodily function. Menstruation is often shrouded in secrecy, with girls expected to hide their periods and avoid discussing them openly. This lack of open dialogue can lead to misinformation, shame, and feelings of embarrassment, further worsening the challenges faced by adolescent girls.
Good Girli was born out of a desire to find an affordable way to help mothers and girls address two huge problems with dignity and love. Good Girli, is a new a local Ugandan business, dedicated to making a real impact in the lives of women and girls. From its workshop in Kabale, Good Girli seamstresses will create high quality washable reusable cloth diapers and sanitary pads. Good Girli is also partnering with Wakisa Ministries in Kampala to produce environmentally friendly, washable, reusable feminine hygiene pads as well. These beautiful products are hand made by Ugandan mothers who received a fair wage and work in good working conditions. In short, they are good for girls!
You can go "Diaper Active" and help a struggling Ugandan mother by providing a complete set of reusable cloth diapers for a mother and her baby.
A one time gift of $30 provides 2 Outer Shells and 5 inner bamboo "soakers" - enough to last a baby from birth through potty training.
